When will the WBS become an All Wales Blood Service?
The Welsh Government announced its intention to move towards an all Wales blood service on 13th June 2012. In July 2015, the Minister for Health and Social Services announced that the new service, which will be known as the Welsh Blood Service, will go live in May 2016.
Why is the change being made?
The benefits of an all-Wales Blood Service include: a strategic fit with the Welsh Government agenda to make all services more streamlined and integrated; preserve the Welsh model of local blood donation; help the Welsh Blood Service plan better, build further resilience to ensure the long term security of collection, processing, testing and supply of blood in Wales is maintained.
Will there be any changes in process for donors who currently donate with the WBS? ?
No. The Welsh Blood Service will continue to provide a quality service to our donors. As always, maintaining the support of dedicated life saving donors remains one of our top priorities.
Where will my blood donation be used?
When we have the all-Wales Blood Service, the Welsh Blood Service will be responsible for all aspects of blood collection across Wales. All blood and blood components collected from donors in Wales will be processed, tested and stored before distribution to Welsh hospitals. These products are vital in supporting patients.
During the change over period, is there any risk to blood safety?
No. The Welsh Blood Service will continue to provide reliable, safe and efficient supplies of blood products to hospitals in South, Mid and West Wales. We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of quality and effectiveness and are regulated by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.
Will current WBS donors be able to donate in North Wales from 2016?
Yes. One of the benefits of having a national blood service is that donors will be able to give blood in all areas of Wales.
