The Welsh Bone Marrow Donor Registry is the first in the UK to introduce a new high resolution test which gives an accurate result of genetic compatibility between donor and patient for transplantation (tissue-typing).
Tracey Rees, Head of Welsh Transplant & Immunogenic added “Every second counts during the early stages of the selection process. High resolution testing allows us to identify a potential donor immediately, saving precious time.”
Dr. Keith Wilson, Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Haematologist at the University Hospital for Wales added “One of the reasons for the increased survival rate is due to the improvement of donor-patient matching. For many patients a bone marrow transplant is a life-saving procedure, which can effectively cure the underlying disease and give hope to patients and their families”.
