What to expect

The need for blood never stops

Someone somewhere is relying on you to give blood

Blood donation is a simple four step process

Step 1 of the Donation Process

Step 1

Firstly we need to register you. Then, a member of our team will show you how to use the touch screen to complete the Donor Health Check Questionnaire, which will tell us about your general health, travel and lifestyle. We want to make sure you are fit and well enough to donate blood and that your blood is safe to give to a patient. In strict confidence a member of our team staff will discuss the health questionnaire with you to assess your suitability.

Step 2 of the Donation Process

Step 2

A drop of blood will be taken from your fingertip so we can measure your hemoglobin (iron) levels and check it is within the acceptable range.

Step 3 of the Donation Process

Step 3

Then your donation is taken, which typically takes around 5-10minutes to complete. We aim to take 475mls (just under a pint) with additional samples for testing. Our staff will keep a close eye on you to make sure everything is fine.

Step 4 of the Donation Process

Step 4

Now it is time for a rest, a drink and biscuits. Giving blood is quick, simple and safe. The entire process, from the time you arrive to the time you leave, takes about 45-60 minutes.
