After you give blood
Now it’s time for a rest, a drink and biscuits before you leave the centre. It’s important to make sure your blood sugar levels are stable and that you’re not dehydrated so that you don’t feel faint or nauseous.
We also recommend keeping the pressure dressing on your arm for 30 minutes after giving blood and keeping the plaster on for at least six hours afterwards. Make sure that you don’t use your arm for anything too strenuous like heavy lifting. If you feel unwell after giving blood, call: us on 0800 252 266, your GP or NHS 999 or 111 for advice.
After making your first donation, and when you reach key milestones – we’ll send you a donor card in the post (this can take up to eight weeks). This card is a small thanks from us to you and it’ll also help you register quicker when you arrive for your next appointment.
The rest of the day
Although you may feel great after your donation, there are several things you can do to reduce the risk of you feeling unwell later.
What to do
- Continue to eat and drink plenty
- Keep the dressing on your arm for at least two hours (show it off, lifesaver!)
What to avoid
- Strenuous exercise or activity (including heavy lifting)
- Hazardous activities that require a lot of concentration
- Hot baths, saunas and steam rooms
- Drinking alcohol
- Smoking cigarettes or vaping for at least two hours
- Standing for long periods
What to do if you feel unwell
- Sit down or lie down immediately
- Tense and relax your legs, stomach and arms to help maintain your blood pressure
- If you’re driving, pull over immediately and call for help. Do not drive if you are feeling unwell or faint after a donation
- Ask someone to keep an eye on you if possible
If you do feel unwell or faint after your donation, please let us know. This is to ensure your safety at future donations.
If you continue to feel unwell, give us a call on 0800 252 266 for advice. You can also contact your GP or NHS Direct Wales for support.
